"Beautiful house, very safe, great views, cool town

1. View is gorgeous, pool is generously sized, house is comfortable and spotlessly clean.
2. AC units in each bedroom and the living area work VERY WELL.
3. Luxurious master bath
4. Well equipped kitchen (lots of dishes, coffee pot, blender, pots/pans, etc. knives etc.)
5. Town of Portero way less busy than Tamarindo but easy to get to places. Great places to eat in Portero and a cool local brewery. The house is close to some of the prettiest beaches in the area (Playa Danta, Playa Prieta) - very short drive.
6. Owner Maria very available and communicative on text and email. Helped troubleshoot a slow internet connection on day 1 so we could work the rest of our stay and had no problems after that."

"You’ll LOVE Villa Encantada! Set up the hillside with gorgeous views over the ocean and the quaint town of Potrero you’ll enjoy every minute on your spacious and shade provided pool deck. The grounds are beautiful, even during the dry season. The house is immaculate, well equipped and well maintained. On-site caretaker Bernie is a humble and happy guy, loyal and attentive to your needs. He only speaks Spanish and if you don’t know any, using a translator app works just fine with him. The road to the house can be challenging for those not used to mostly unpaved and rugged terrain but you’ll adapt quickly. (We’ve seen worse!) We’ve rented many homes in North and Central America and the Caribbean so have had pretty good exposure to hits and misses. This place is clearly a hit largely due to the owner’s hands on approach. Maria was a delight to work with and was extremely attentive. She wants to make sure you have the best vacation possible…and succeeds. You won’t be disappointed."

"Simply beautiful villa on the high hills above Potrero. Compared with other spots in CR we’ve stayed, off resorts, the road was not bad ( only like 2km off the paved road). Very attentive on-site caretaker. Very “US” style kitchen, living room, laundry etc. WiFi works great even out by the gorgeous infinity pool (about 4ft depth). Super clean upon our arrival. Would return."

"Our family (6 adults) recently stayed at Villa Encantada for a week in Costa Rica and would highly recommend staying at Maria's. The photos on the listing accurately represent how beautiful the house and scenery are, but don't do justice to how spectacular the location and view actually are. We spent the entire week waking up with the birds and enjoying local coffee, exploring the area during the day (there are many beautiful beaches and delicious sodas in close proximity) and enjoying the stunning sunsets poolside each evening.

Maria also helped to facilitate a local private chef (Chef Eduardo and his team with Flamingo Foods) and a catamaran tour (a morning sail with Panache Sailing) both of which exceeded our expectations. She was readily available over Airbnb or email and catered to all of our needs prior to and during our stay in Costa Rica. The caretaker on-site, Bernie, was always present, smiling, and ready to provide a helping hand. Despite us not speaking Spanish, and he not speaking English, we were able to communicate with the help of Google translate and thoroughly enjoyed the connection with him.

The house was thoroughly stocked with everything you need and there were multiple local mercados (MerKdo, Super Massai Grocery) that were easily accessible. We would definitely recommend renting a 4x4 to access the home and other areas as there were some challenging roads to navigate. We couldn't have picked a better spot to enjoy la Pura Vida!"

"Definitely get a four wheel drive. But it is WELL WORTH every single bump along the way as the view is absolutely incredible!!! The Infinity pool has perfect views just as pictured and the master suite has a great balcony with beautiful views as well.

The house is clean, well kept though not totally updated and modern but everything you need for a perfect Costa Rican vacation. The groundskeeper Bernie is simply adorable and helpful (though brush up on your Spanish!) and the pool is beautiful and clean!

Maria was SUPER helpful before and during the trip. She recommended some incredible restaurants and beautiful beaches. The house is well prepared for your arrival with shampoo, conditioner and body wash as well as plenty of towels - including plenty for the beach and pool. And also laundry detergent, dish soap and all the needed kitchen “stuff” like a coffee maker, blender, and toaster.

The villa is located in a great place with amazing views as I said but easy drives to Playa Flamingo and other beaches and only about 40 minutes from Tamarindo. There are tons of great restaurants right in Playa Potrero where the villa is located.

We truly enjoyed everything about our trip to Costa Rica and our stay at Villa Encantada."

"We rented Villa Encantada for 3 weeks in February 2020. While there, we had both our sons and a girlfriend, and some good friends stay for a shorter time. Maria, the owner, was extremely helpful in suggesting restaurants and activities, all of which were very good. We were continually in touch with her if we had questions, and she replied promptly.

We were also fortunate to have Bernie, the caretaker, nearby to help us in many ways. He is sweet and cheerful, and a hard worker, and we communicated well with Google translate, and the little Spanish we knew.

The Villa is up on a hill and offers a beautiful view of the water and countryside. We also loved the fact that there is a 4km hiking trail right behind the Villa which you have to walk early in the morning as it gets too hot, otherwise.

We enjoyed all the amenities in the villa- a salt water infinity pool, Bar B Q, and lounging area inside and out. Restaurants, beaches, and shopping are not too far away but you need a vehicle, preferably an SUV. Everyone in the shops and restaurants are very friendly.

There is zip-lining, boat tours to view wild animals, waterfalls, catamaran tours, surf lessons, and enough to keep you busy exploring the area. However, it was just as good relaxing at the Villa.

We would certainly love to go back to Costa Rica, and staying again at this Villa would be wonderful!"

​"Our stay at Villa Encantada was nothing short of outstanding! The home is beautiful with plenty of room for a family. We spent quite a bit of time on the deck enjoying the pool and the sun in between our excursions to Costa Rica activities. We particularly enjoyed having coffee on the balcony outside the master bedroom. The view is terrific and we took particular interest in the troop of green parrots that always seemed to be on some raucous parrot business. They would leave and fly over the house only to return moments later.

The property caretaker, Bernie, was a wonderful guy and we enjoyed his willingness to answer questions about the area and provide advice. A great guy.

Maria made solid recommendations to us about local grocery stores, a fishing excursion in which we caught a 300-pound marlin, a separate sunset cruise, a visiting chef that prepared a dinner for us one night, visits to parks and zip-lining. We also located a trail system just outside Villa Encantada with beautiful vines and flowers along the path.

We highly recommend this property and also the advice that Maria provided. Pura Vida!"

"We stayed for a week in April. The home is beautiful and large with a fantastic outdoor patio and pool area. The views are just perfect; the pictures on the website could never do them justice. The home is in a great location which was very private, peaceful and quiet. Bernie, the on-site caretaker, was very accommodating and friendly. It was nice knowing he was close by if we needed anything and it added to the sense of security we enjoyed. The owner Maria made sure everything went smoothly with booking and was very helpful. Make sure you rent a 4x4 SUV. The road to the house has some bumpy and/or steep areas (as does much of Costa Rica), but with the SUV it was a piece of cake.

"There are many beaches in the area and we hopped from beach to beach exploring daily. Our favorites were Prieta and Flamingo. There are also many great restaurants close by. Grab dinner and watch the sunset at Coco Loco and the Sugar Beach Hotel restaurant. You will not be disappointed. Feeding the monkeys at the Monkey Bar and Grill was great fun and worth the drive. Serendipity sunset cruise was wonderful, small semi-private group, not the typical overcrowded booze cruise. Pura Vida!!!"

"What a great vacation home! The salt water pool was perfect. Everything you need to relax and enjoy the unbelievable view every day—and especially at night. The sunsets are unreal. Weather was perfect.

We went zip lining and ATVing—what a blast! The owner, Maria, suggested the Catamaran, and we had a great time snorkeling and drinking to the great tunes the crew played for us. We also had a fantastic dinner at dusk enjoying the sunset from the middle of the ocean. Maria was on her own trip and still was able to communicate with me via email when I needed any help. What can I say? I have never been to Costa Rica before, but it is as close as Hawaii and more fun.

"Maria’s house is absolutely gorgeous! We had everything we needed, and the view is breathtaking! The road up to the house caught us off guard but by the end of the week we were pros at driving it. You definitely need a four wheel drive vehicle.

Having Bernie there is great! He really is invaluable. He kept the pool sparkling clean every day and was always there to help or answer questions.

The location is great. Far enough away from the tourist areas to feel secluded but close enough to drive in and have fun.

Maria was extremely helpful and answered all of our questions very quickly. We had two unexpected family members that wanted to join our trip and since we were already at maximum capacity for the house, Maria helped us find a nearby hotel for them.

I could not recommend Villa Encantada enough. We have completely fallen in love with Costa Rica and will definitely be back! Thank you, Maria!"

"Our experience at Villa Encantada was AMAZING! The house was beautiful and clean. The pool was clean and amazing with a breathtaking view. The kitchen and the house itself was well stocked with anything you would need for a perfect vacation. The pictures do not do it justice. We are a party of 6 who just returned from our vacation. We highly recommend this property to anyone visiting Costa Rica. Most importantly is the way Maria and Special Places communicated with us before and during our stay. Both were very helpful and quick to respond to our inquiries. We had 2 nights with a chef which were amazing. Chef Frank and Chef Estafenia are both wonderful cooks and wonderful people! "Villa Encantada had everything we needed for two families traveling together. Maria and her team made sure every request was handled. From rental cars to private chefs to in-home massages to private excursions — there wasn't anything they couldn't do for us! We loved having our own cliff-side paradise. The road up to the house was worth the bumps, as nothing compares to the view and tranquility.

The kitchen had everything we needed to whip up meals or cocktails. The kids had a blast in the pool or playing games provided by the house. "Villa Encantada, in the area of Playa Potrero, is delightful. It’s in an area called Pacific Heights, a very appropriate name for a “mountain” overlooking a large swathe of the Pacific Ocean. As we travel to Costa Rica every year at Thanksgiving, we have found this villa to be perfectly situated. The house is lovely with accommodations for family and/or friends. There is a large master bedroom/bath on the second floor as well as another large bedroom with two beds (I believe two queens) which can be occupied by a small family, if necessary. A private bath is included for this bedroom as well. Downstairs is another bedroom and bath, perfect for a third couple. There is also a half bath on the first floor. The house itself is lovely, well equipped and nicely decorated. Bernie, the caretaker, is available for questions or conversation whenever you like. He takes care of the pool, a sizable structure with beautiful views. There is a table and chairs outside, as well as lounge chairs by the pool. Temperature of the water is perfect.

We especially like staying in this area as it is only an hour (or so) from the Liberia Airport. It is possible to arrive, buy groceries (numerous supermarkets as you drive to meet the property manager who will accompany you to Villa Encantada), unpack, and have a drink as you watch the sunset. It’s a fairly easy, but very bumpy, trip down the hill as you choose one of many restaurants for dinner.

We also enjoyed the service of chef Juan Manual or a very special meal in the dining room. Although the diners must choose the same menu, we had no trouble with that as there were many appetizers, entrees, and desserts available. Dinner was delicious.

"I am generally hesitant to use a house/vacation home on my getaways. Always rather spend more money and stay in a well-known hotel. But I can say that Villa Encantada has been an amazing experience. "Perfect place for guy’s getaway! Villa Encantada is beautiful and is truly a “home away from home," except it is in the one of the most amazing places in the world! I went for a quick vacation with a couple of my friends that I have known for 30+ years. We spent five days at the Villa relaxing and catching up as we explored the wonderful Guanacaste area of Costa Rica. We played two wonderful days of golf at Reserva Conchall Golf Club, which was not only a great golf course, but came with howler monkeys as spectators... way too cool!

We spent time at several of the local beaches, riding boogie boards, playing frisbee, and topping that off with a wonderful massage on the beach at Playa Flamingo! We had lunch and cocktails afterward at Lola’s. Just another amazing day in Costa Rica.

Maria, the owner, has everything set up from the rental cars to the fantastic tour of the Estuary at Palo Verde National Park, where we saw some of the most amazing species of birds, white face and howler monkeys, and so many crocodiles it was quite eerie.

We lounged by the infinity pool enjoying the most beautiful views and sunsets and barbequed a couple of wonderful meals. The capper to our trip was the private chef that Maria set up for us. They served up an amazing coffee-coated steak and barbequed shrimp dinner that was absolutely phenomenal. The steak melted in your mouth; they finished the dinner off with individual chocolate soufflé and ice cream that was done to perfection.

The worst part of the whole trip was having to leave!! I am going back with my family in July and cannot wait to spend some quality time with them exploring and enjoying this beautiful country and relaxing at Villa Encantada."

"Beautiful villa in Guanacaste overlooking the ocean and mountains. We went for Christmas and New Years, which was fantastic. The fireworks on Playa Flamingo were amazing. We were a party of 8 and were very comfortable. Two couples did share a room with two queens, which was perfectly fine because we were always outside. The location is perfect for exploring Playa Avellana, Tamarindo, Playa Hermosa, Coco and the beaches within Potrero; Flamingo, Penca, Conchal and a few others. It is a 5 minute drive down the hill to get to the local beaches. There are plenty of restaurants nearby and markets if you prefer to cook at the villa (grill and full kitchen). The local fish market is great for fresh seabass, mahi mahi, tuna, and octopus. The check-in process was easy. Bernie, the caretaker, was very helpful and took care of any issues that arose. Maria was responsive and helpful throughout the whole trip. She helped plan to have a local cook and chef come to the villa and recommended the sunset cruise, which was a lot of fun. We also had a masseuse and yoga instructor come to the villa — highly recommend both. It is amazing with the view and there is a perfect area on the patio for both. Great villa and an excellent host."

"If you want the ultimate tropical vacation, this is the perfect home away from home. The view from the whole house is spectacular and breathtaking. There is an infinity pool that looks out to the ocean. The whole house is surrounded by a green tropical forest, and you can see some beautiful birds. We even saw a small deer and some kit foxes. The house is located about 10 minutes from the beautiful Penca beach and several restaurants that are excellent. The house is perfectly clean with all the amenities you may need, including some fun games.

I liked the fact that it is away from all the tourists. You will have to drive an hour or so if you want to go on some of the excursions but we were able to go on a really fun catamaran sunset cruise the owner recommended which was one of the funnest activities we did. That was only a 10 min drive from the house.

Maria, the owner of the house, responds quickly to any of your emails and always willing to help with anything you need. There is a caretaker named Bernie that lives on the property. He was so sweet and there to help with anything we needed. He washed our beach towels for us and would have them folded ready to go when we needed them. He mopped and clean the floors in the middle of the week and took our trash out.

There is a great restaurant/bar nearby that we enjoyed called Perlas. It has great food as well as a huge tv to watch your favorite sports, and also a big screen with music videos playing.

This was one of the funnest vacations we have had and can't wait to return to Costa Rica. We would definitely stay here again. Thank you Maria!!!"

"I had the pleasure of spending a week at Villa Encantada on a fabulous girls weekend and absolutely loved it!

The Villa Encantada is a sublime space to experience the beauty of Costa Rica. The house is beautifully furnished with plenty of amenities, including ensuite baths, outdoor dining area, BBQ, infinity pool, and of course its spectacular views from both the ground level and the terrace. Within reach of the estate are excellent beaches, with snorkeling, catamaran riding, fishing, as well as waterfalls and zip-lining within the jungle interior.

The owner, Maria, was extremely helpful with an abundance of information. She arranged for us to have a private chef come to the villa on our last night for a three-course meal. Fresh fish and all local fresh produce were used. The meal was absolutely delicious. She also arranged for a masseuse to come to the villa for massages.

I highly recommend Villa Encantada and cannot wait to go back with my family this time.

We made many memories on our trip to Costa Rica, and this estate was the perfect setting for our adventures."

​"Ready to book my next trip! A group of friends and myself went in August 2016. We'll definitely be coming back and staying at this place I call "Paradise." We're all pretty much in our 50's, although sometimes we think we're 25. Needless to say, these are my FUN, friends!

Here's my review: The location of this property was perfect. Nestled up on a hillside for a breathtaking view and just a few miles away from beautiful beaches, great restaurants, bars, activities, shopping. If you like to hike, go early! It's hot and the mountain is steep at times but, wow, the views are incredible! We spent our days on excursions of ziplining, golfing, snorkeling, and the guys went fishing one day while the ladies relaxed poolside and then went shopping. The catamaran cruise was fun at sunset and we got lots of gorgeous pictures. Oh, and lots and lots of fish tacos. Now THAT'S what I call vacation! Our evenings were spent relaxing by the patio and poolside where we bbq'd, played games, enjoyed great music and delicious cocktails made with special blends of various juices... even carrot which surprisingly turned out to be very tasty. All in all, great vacation. And if you're still reading this review, BOOK THIS PLACE. You won't be disappointed. Cheers!"

"We had a wonderful time at Villa Encantada In Guanacaste. The house is very comfortable and super clean​​"Our stay at Villa Encantada Potrero was the perfect end to our Costa Rican vacation. Not only are the ocean views breathtaking, but the house is fabulous... Beautifully appointed, extremely spacious, and meticulously clean. It seems there is nothing they haven't thought of. Bernie, the caretaker, is so kind and is there if you ever need anything. Each day we explored a different local beach, one more beautiful than the next. We loved returning to the house for a late afternoon swim, as well as our morning breakfasts outside on the shaded patio. Maria (the owner) suggested hiring a private chef for our last dinner, and recommended one too. Juan and his wife prepared and served an amazing dinner. Each plate delicious and a work of art.

"Great vacation. I just wanted to get away with friends and relax; this is the place to do it. The view is extraordinary, and the beaches are awesome: Each beach has its own personality. You're in great hands with Maria. We just gave her an idea of what we were looking to do, and she took care of everything or at least pointed us in the right direction... she's great!! From golfing, to fishing, to zip-lining—everything was fantastic. We wanted to do everything close to the house, and we were accommodated in every way. Lots of great dining everywhere we went. The best part for me was lounging around at the house and in the infinity pool, and simply relaxing and enjoying the view, you can't get enough of it. I wanted to relax, and this house allowed for that without exception. "I stayed there with my 14-year-old twin boys and some other adult friends, all around 50 years old and everyone had an amazing time. We could have easily spent the whole time in the back patio just looking over the incredible scenery and enjoying the wildlife, but we decided to so some activities. Maria arranged for us to go fishing, zip-lining, snorkeling, golf, and other activities, and each one was top-notch. My kids especially enjoyed the evening catamaran/snorkeling cruise, and couldn't stop talking about the blowfish they saw underwater. And of course we saw monkeys in the wild, which my kids really bragged about to their friends when we got home. Great accommodations, great experience, great food, and beautiful beaches. I could see myself going there a few times a year and never getting tired of it. It's a strong recommend from me!"

​​"I recently rented the beautiful Villa Encantada in Costa Rica. It was my 50th birthday celebration, and the weather was absolutely gorgeous. The house is amazing with the infinity pool, and weather was in the 80s daily, perfect for swimming. The property is very well kept, and I fell in love the high ceilings. Bedding was very comfortable, which made it easy to fall asleep. It was great to purchase our own food for cooking and using the BBQ pit. One suggestion would be to advise tenants when cooking on the stove: use only two burners at a time for full normal capacity of the fire. We used three burners and our food took a long time to cook.

The caretaker Bernie was great, always around when you need him. I will absolutely recommend the property to other family members and friends to enjoy as much as I did. Thank you to the homeowner Maria’s help, with organizing shuttle services/transportation, taxi services, recommendations, and referring us to the marvelous chef for my birthday dinner; this made our stay the best vacation I have ever experienced. Thank you."

"We had the pleasure of staying at Villa Encantada Potrero. The home is gorgeous: It is well appointed in addition to having new furnishings and appliances. The infinity pool in the back patio, as well as all rooms, share beautiful panoramic views of either the Pacific Ocean or the Costa Rican hills.

The caretaker was so respectful and attentive to keeping everything in order during our stay. The Costa Rican people were friendly and accommodating. There was plenty of local restaurants and things to do and see within a reasonable distance of the Villa.Down the hill from the home is a local stable with wonderful owners and staff. We enjoyed a superb ride on the beach for 2 hours, ending with a sunset and drinks at the local Las Brisas restaurant on the sand.

We hired a wonderful local tour guide named Diego who took us to see exotic birds, monkeys, and alligators, if you want a more adventurous tour… or simply to have a knowledgeable guide take you shopping and to find restaurants. It was worth it because Frommers and other books may not know of the latest new place or the best authentic food where the locals go.

The name truly suits it—an enchanted, luxurious estate. It was wonderful to feel like we were part of the community while sitting perched up on a hill overlooking the beautiful ocean and jungle views. The nearby beaches, waterfalls, catamaran ride/snorkeling, and shopping were so much fun too! We've traveled the world, and have not stepped into an ocean so warm and clear. The swimming was extraordinary. Also, the recommendation of your private chef was amazing! "This was my first trip to Costa Rica, and I couldn’t believe how Villa Encantada exceeded my expectations. Sitting on top of a hill, the location was perfect with the most beautiful views of the ocean along with complete privacy. The home is bright, spacious, and beautifully decorated. The owners provide you with suggestions and recommendations for dinning, tours/excursions, massages, and even a recommendation for a private chef, which I highly recommend.

Costa Rica has the most beautiful beaches and waterfalls to visit, and at the end of a long day of exploring it was so nice to come back to Villa Encantada and relax in this beautiful property.
